Over the past few days, I have been showing you some basic administration examples of what you can do by using Windows PowerShell to manage a WSUS server.

During the course of some of these examples, I alluded to some methods that required a Computer Target Scope object. Well, today is the day that I get to show you how you can build a Computer Target Scope object and use that with some of the existing objects we have already created. The Computer Target Scope is, as the name implies, a scope that that can be used to filter a list of clients. The first thing we need to do is create the scope object, which we can then use in some of the methods we have seen.

To do this will require us to create the new object from the Microsoft. ComputerTargetScope class. Simple enough to do, and we can choose to leave the default properties that are already set for this object if we want to. So as a default object, this will reference all clients on the WSUS server.

Fortunately, you can edit most of these properties to narrow down the clients that you want to use. Here is a list of the editable properties:. Gets or sets whether or not clients of a downstream server, not clients of this server, should be included. Now, if you remember from the previous posts, there are some methods from the Update object Microsoft.

UpdateServer that require a computer scope object to work. Another method that we can use, which provides a report on the computers that match the scope filter is GetComputerStatus. This method requires that you have a computer scope object and that you define a Microsoft.

You might be wondering why we are seeing mostly 0 s here. If you look closely, you can see that only the areas where it mentions the computer targets are populated.

This will give us a summary of whether the clients that are specified in the scope require the update. By looking at the data provided, I can see that only 1 client out of the 3 require this update and that it has already been downloaded to that client. But the problem is…which client requires the update? But this is Windows PowerShell, after all, and we can certainly make this better for us to read. Much better! Now we have something that not only tells us which client, but actually gives us the name of the client without giving us a GUID to try to guess with.

Well, that wraps it up for today. Boe, thank you for another great blog about using the WSUS object model. WSUS Week will continue tomorrow. I invite you to follow me on Twitter and Facebook. If you have any questions, send email to me at scripter microsoft.

See you tomorrow. Until then, peace. Comments are closed. Scripting Forums. PowerShell Forums.

A Nature Research Journal EditorialWorthy reports are as frequently encountered in Washington DC as grand monuments and are just as likely to be ignored by the locals.

But lawmakers will fail their constituents if they manage to ignore the latest study on competitiveness by the National Academies. The report, Rising Above the Gathering Storm, addresses resurgent fears that the United States' longstanding global leadership in research and development is on the wane. Written by a panel chaired by Norman Augustine, former chief executive of technology corporation Lockheed Martin, it offers several concrete recommendations designed to keep that leadership intact.

Whether the US government pays any attention or not, its competitors will find the panel's findings well worth a look. Whereas previous studies of this kind have focused primarily on research funding, this one concentrates much of its attention on improving the nation's scientific literacy. It calls for the annual recruitment of some 10,000 science and maths teachers, proposing that science undergraduates be lured into the classroom with generous scholarships, with the lofty goal of improving science education at school for some 10 million people.

This proposal may appear to some US politicians to be central planning run amok and it doesn't really address the low pay and social standing of teachers in the United States.

But it does have potential and precedent: an existing programme called Teach for America has succeeded in recruiting thousands of young college graduates to teach in the nation's most troubled neighbourhoods. Other recommendations of note include a call for the creation of a new energy-research agency that would conduct low-cost, high-risk, high-reward research projects. This would be modelled on the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which has been highly successful in backing exciting, basic research that may spawn useful technology.

Another new entity would be set up expressly to arrange for the construction of scientific facilities. It suggests a new category of generous grants that would allow young researchers early in their career to firmly establish their own lines of enquiry. Furthermore, it calls for changes in US immigration policy that would make it easier for foreign students and scientists to stay in the country to continue their careers.

Both these suggestions will require serious political commitment to implement but they would go a long way towards fostering fresh scientific talent. Senators Lamar Alexander (Republican, Tennessee) and Jeff Bingaman (Democrat, New Mexico), who commissioned the study, must now try to drum up support on Capitol Hill for the implementation of its recommendations.

Use PowerShell to Find Missing Updates on WSUS Client Computers

They face an uphill battle, given the size of the US budget deficit and inevitable political resistance to such concepts as further federal involvement in school education. The United States' competitors, in Europe and the Far East, also need to consider such measures, and might actually find some of them easier to implement.Any idea why that would be happening.

I noticed in your response to the previous comment you said that the link has to be generated from a mobile phone in order to work correctly. For reference, I am in the US, and your link above opens and goes straight to the star review on both my computer and iPhone. However, I have not been able to get it to work for our Google My Business Page. For reference I have 4 separate locations all tied together on Google My Business. However, the link(s) will not open to the star review page ever, they only open to our Google page and would require a person to then select the leave a review, etc.

When creating the link, I followed your instructions precisely, and tried creating the link to one of our locations Google pages specifically. Thank you in advance for sharing the article and any ideas. Thanks for the note about changing the 3 to a 5 in the desktop URL to pre-fill a 5 star rating. That was actually an issue I discovered when writing a previous version of this article. Although, I did not look into it in depth.

My best guess as to why it works differently for you it that you are not in the United States, and Google My Business may not work the same is other countries. In the past, other methods that I posted only worked in the US. You might need to reboot your phone or clear the cache. I just checked my short link on all the popular mobile and desktop browsers, and the short URL works on all devices and browsers. If I do as described above for my own business on a mobile, I can click on the link on a mobile and have the review pop up and 5 stars pre-populated.

HOWEVER, when I click the link on a desktop, I DO NOT get the review page appear (and must go looking for it). See this link as created on my up to date iPhone. It does not appear to be universal. It does appear to be universal. Changes made by Google. Thanks fir the question. Yes, you need to use a cell phone to create the direct link to the Google My Business review box if you want the link to be universal and work on all devices. This is because the link structure is created differently on mobile devices, with a different structure.

Desktop browsers load review box using javascript and mobile browsers do not. Still a good write-up, Travis.
